From the Editor...
Eleven years ago this summer, we opened Inklings Bookshop with the hope of offering the Lynchburg community a place where they could find good books, especially those promoting the permanent things of the classical, Christian tradition. It was our vision not to be a “Christian” bookshop, but simply a bookshop that promoted good reading, within a Christian world-view. We have tried to offer a wide selection of thoughtful books, specializing in the Inklings of course (C. S. Lewis and those authors associated with him), but also thoughtful books by other Christian writers who represent the breadth and depth of classical, orthodox Christian thinking, as well as other literature, Christian or not, that has stood the test of time (or that we just happen to like). We also sell used books in just about every area of interest, and from time to time a few things that would qualify as “rare and collectible.”
The world-wide-web has grown exponentially since our beginning and has dramatically reshaped the way we communicate, the means of getting the news, and the way we buy books. More and more of us rely on email and web-based content for our news, and many of us turn to Amazon or other online stores for book purchases. We could bemoan this reality (and I frequently do!), or we can accept it and endeavor to work within it.
With those realities in mind, I have been encouraged to publish a monthly newsletter. We hope that you will find this informative and helpful.
Each month we hope to have book reviews from a regular group of reviewers, and from a guest reviewer or two each month. We hope to also provide a way for you to easily order books from our website, which can be delivered directly to you, or can be picked up at Inklings Bookshop. We will endeavor to offer these featured items at a discount. We will not be able to match the prices of the big online stores, but we hope that you might gain some satisfaction from knowing that your support of Inklings Bookshop will help to promote our mission and keep some dollars in the local community.
We seek your suggestions as to how we may improve our newsletter and the bookshop itself. Please feel free to forward this letter to any you think may appreciate it. If you wish not to receive the newsletter, let us know, and you will be removed from the distribution list.
Blessings to all.
Grace and peace,
Ed Hopkins
