From the Editor...
Welcome to the November 2007 issue of The Inklings Review.
The season of Advent begins Sunday December 2. In the first section of this issue we review three recent Advent and Christmas devotionals and a few exceptional recordings of carols. Inklings Bookshop is offering these to our customers at special reduced prices.
In this issue we review four books related to the theme of Holy Scripture.
S.N.D., our sometimes diligent scribe, opens by reviewing Has God Said? Scripture, The Word of God, and the Crisis of Theological Authority by John Douglas Morrison, Professor of Theology and Philosophy at Liberty University.
First time contributor Matt Hubinger reviews The Mystery of Christ: Life in Death by John Behr, Dean and Chancellor of St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. Behr presents an Orthodox view of how the disciples and early church fathers took a Christ-centered approach to the interpretation of Holy Scripture. It is the first Orthodox title we have reviewed and Matt is our first Orthodox contributor.
Our scribe continues this issue's theme by reviewing John Piper's powerful summary of the commands of Jesus in What Jesus Demands from the World and then Can We Trust the Gospels? by Mark D. Roberts.
We had hoped to include in this issue a review by Lon Atkins of Peter Jensen's The Revelation of God, but Lon has been seriously ill for the past several weeks. We ask our readers to pray for Lon's recovery.
For an excellent (and more scholarly) review of three other recent books pertaining to Holy Scripture by John Webster, N.T. Wright, and Peter Enns, we highly recommend D.A. Carson's article "Three Books on the Bible: A Critical Review" published in the Reformation21 online magazine.
We hope you find these reviews helpful and the books reviewed enlightening and edifying.
Blessings to all.
Under the mercy,
Ed Hopkins
